Although the marketing message may sound clever, the only thing it's succeeded at is running people into the ground, while taking the pure joy and beauty out of training.

In 1976, Arnold Schwarzenegger posed with Frank Zane and Ed Corney at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
The presentation was called "Articulate Muscle: The Body as Art".
As these impressive men struck magnificent poses while slowly spinning around on a turn table, some of the most prominant art historians from around the world debated whether or not bodybuilding was a legitimate art form... and indeed it is!
They looked like the statues of Greek and Roman gods, which we have admired for centuries.
Phidias, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Rodin, and many of the great artists from centuries ago had unlocked this secret to the ultimate aesthetically pleasing physique.
It's displayed in their magnificent statues and paintings. The secret is in the spectacular symmetry, perfect proportions, and beautiful balance.
Scientists have been studying these works of art for decades resulting in the mathematical term "Phi", which has been associated with ideal proportions... Some refer to it as the "Golden Ratio".
It just so happens that when you achieve this "golden ratio" with your physique, it creates a look that is most aesthetically pleasing.
For guys it involves having nice broad shoulders and a tight waist. For women it's about the hour glass figure... shoulder width, small waist, shapely hips/thighs.
It's as if we know it when we see it. It attracts our attention immediately. You'll often hear it referred to as a v-taper, where your upper body is formed in the shape of a "V".
But I believe that it goes beyond just hitting your golden ratio. You should strive for sculpting your most detailed, finished, and polished look possible.
When you hit your golden ratio in addition to carving out deep cuts in your abs, striations in your shoulders, as well as defined arms and legs, your physique will truly become awe inspiring.
This is clearly where physique training trumps mainstream fitness. It's the attention to detail that sets it apart. Specific exercises and training are designed to give you this "Look" and ideal proportions.
While some may view it as vanity, to a Physique Artist the competitive fitness model and natrual bodybuilding stage is their art gallery.
Their physiques are being judged on the same criteria that went into sculpting the most impressive statues of all time. Symmetry, proportions, and balance are the key components the judges are looking for.
So it only makes sense that these fitness models and physique athletes would follow a workout structure producing the body that not only impresses the judged, but one that we all find most aesthetically pleasing.
These sexy fitness models and bodybuilders weren't just born with great genetics, they earned their physique in the gym... and in the kitchen.
It would absolutely blow your mind when you hear the background story from many of the competitors. Some of them lost over 100 lbs before stepping on stage. Most of them never dreamed about competing until now.
In most cases they are men and women just like you, who decided to take their physique to the next level while striving for their full potential...
...and this group of pasionate goal achieving men and women is growing by the day, which is why the fitness model and physique comptetitions have never been more popular.

That may sound a little strange right now, especially when your body and life are pretty good, but trust me, the difference between how you feel right now and how you will feel just a short time from now, will be like night and day.
As I mentioned, we're speaking from first hand experience here. We weren't always as confident as we look in the picture above, nor were we confident wearing a swimsuit.
You see, it wasn’t that long ago that Angie and I were in your position. Compared to many men and women we looked good and they let us know it. Some people envied how we looked and said they would die to have a body like ours. They thought we were lean, but we knew better.
Their definition and standard for “Lean” was much different than ours. Angie knew that she had cellulite on her thighs and butt and this really upset her. It made her feel uncomfortable. She wasn't able to wear revealing bathing suits.
She felt like she wanted to cover herself up... and that's exactly what she did. Every pool party that she attended and every outing to the beach, you could find her with a wrap tied around her waist in order to hide the cellulite on her butt and thighs.
That really sucks, because she felt uncomfortable in her own skin. Her confidence was lower than it should be and she wasn't living her life to the fullest.
I knew that I had excess fat that was hiding my abs. I knew that I didn’t have definition in my arms and shoulders. I was not entirely happy with what I saw in the mirror and there were many moments throughout the day when I would be reminded of that last bit of stubborn fat that was hanging onto my body.
For example; With my shirt off I looked decent while standing up, but the second that I sat down you would see a roll of fat hang over my pants.
I was reminded of this roll of fat every time that I had to bend over and tie my shoes. It was uncomfortable, but at least I was alone and nobody could see it.
It was a completely different story when I was around a group of people at a pool. I would avoid chairs. I didn’t want to sit down. I didn’t want anyone to see that disgusting roll of fat hang over my swim suit.
I was incredibly self-conscious about this, which was a huge blow to my confidence. I felt like everyone was looking at my stomach.
I wondered what they were thinking and did whatever I could to take their attention away from my lower belly fat.
I would play these moments over and over in my head whenever I would catch a glimpse of my stomach in the mirror as I stepped out of the shower. That layer of fat that was hiding my lower abs was haunting me.
It was even worse whenever I would catch a glimpse of fitness magazine covers or watching my favorite action heroes in a movie.
Their impressive physiques reminded me of just how average my body was.
I didn’t want to be average. I wanted to look like these guys... like super heroes. I wanted women to look at me like they do these guys on the cover of fitness magazines.
Side note: I’m happily married and a devoted husband, but it sure as hell feels awesome to know that other women are attracted to you ;)
The crazy thing is that I was working out often and eating well.
The problem was that I was still working out like I was when I was an ultra busy parent with two kids under the age of three and a new business that demanded up to 16 hours out of my day.
In order to maintain some kind of fitness routine I was forced to condense my workouts. This worked fine for keeping me lean, but I sacrificed strength, muscle mass, and the "look" that I truly desired in the process.
...and that's the dirty little secret of mainstream fitness...
Frankly, I can’t believe how long I went being oblivious as to why I didn’t have the physique that I desired. I guess it’s because so many of the mainstream workout programs hype up the benefits of shorter workouts.
This gave me an excuse to continue performing abbreviated workouts. If everyone else is doing it, it must be good right? Well, not really.
As I looked at the physiques of many people who were performing these mainstream workout programs I noticed that they were all average. They were all scrawny, yet kinda flabby at the same time. Worst of all they were weak!
It was at this time that I decided to become a maverick, “Buck” the trends, and stop listening to all the “Noise” that was coming from the mainstream fitness industry.
It was time to start having conversations with REAL men and women who had the kind of impressive physique that Angie and I desired.
It was time to go underground and immerse myself in the culture that has proven to carve out the best looking physiques for over half a century.
A culture that has respect for the old school methods of training as well as an appreciation for some of the new school strategies that can accelerate your results.
As I began picking their brain about training and training philosophies, I immediately recognized that these men and women viewed workouts in a completely different light.
To them it was an art form. It was about sculpting a specific look. It was about cosmetics.
You want to look great naked right? You want to look HOT and feel HOT! I'm sure that it's one of the biggest reasons why you workout... if not THE biggest reason.
If the purpose of working out is to create a specific look, doesn't it make sense that you should be training in order to achieve that look... not to just burn calories.
Decades ago, one of the greatest classic physique artists of all time, Vince Gironda, referred to this style of training as Cosmetic Bodybuilding.
The purpose is to shape and sculpt your body to look it's absolute
best. Symmetry, balanced proportions, and carved out definition are just a few of the eye catching characteristics of a physique artist.
Bottom line... physique artists pay attention to the finer details.
After picking the brains of the top Physique Artists whom I admire, I knew that I was onto something great, so I continued digging deeper and applying their philosophies and strategies to my own training to see if my assumptions were correct.
It took just 21 short days before it became overwhelmingly obvious that I stumbled upon a formula” for developing a strong, ripped, and desirable body.
Before we continue, I must warn you, that what I am about to share goes against what many of the wanna-be, mainstream fitness pros have been telling you.
You know... those so-called fitness experts who hop on the latest hyped up trend that’s only backed up by theory.
Ya... you know who I’m talking about. Those imposters who put the sale before the truth and would rather see you fail so you can buy another one of their hyped up programs based on yet another new trendy fitness routine.
Well screw them. They can continue wasting their time performing “Circus Act Workouts” and living their life in a weak and scrawny body while we get sculpted, strong, and feel EMPOWERED!

I’m going to let you in on a little secret... EMPOWERED men and women don’t need to reference a boat load of research in order to prove that their methods work.
While these mammsy pansy trainers spew out all the reasons why I should avoid the exercises that I’m performing and the foods that I eat, I simply roll up my sleeves, flex my muscle and pull up my shirt to reveal my abs. Their weak and flabby mouth usually shuts up at that point.
Does that make me a “meathead”? Maybe, but so be it. I’d rather be a meathead with the body of a Greek God than some hooligan that could pass for a Richard Simmons look alike ;)
Don’t get me wrong, the world is a better place with a few Richard
Simmons clones prancing around, but what most guys want is an impressive, strong, and muscular physique.
I know this because every single day I get asked, “Scott... How do I get arms like you?” by members of my gym, my friends, or readers of my Metabolic Masterpiece blog.
Guys like to look and feel strong. I've even had the worlds leading body transformation expert (In my humble opinion), asking me repeatedly,
Angie is constantly being asked for her arm training secrets that make her look stunning in a strapless gown. Women are frequently asking her how she's been able to carve out six pack abs even though she's had a c-section.
After wiping the drool from their mouths, men comment on how great Angie's butt looks, which probably explains why women so desperately want to know Angie's secrets to building a sexy butt.
Unfortunately the mainstream workout programs that pump millions of dollars into advertising, can not produce this kind of chiseled physique that you desire.
If you truly want to sculpt an impressive physique, you’ve got to go underground, where the men and women with the greatest physiques in the world have been quietly going about their business and achieving extraordinary results by applying time-tested and proven Physique Training strategies.
What you will see from these fellow mavericks who buck the trends, is that they apply a specific method that allows them to maximize the benefits of every single workout. It’s what I’ve coined, “The A.T.T.R.A.C.T. formula”...
...and believe me, when you apply this formula your physique will definitely attract some positive attention.
The “A” in The ATTRACT Formula stands for Art. In the words of one of my greatest role models, Shawn Phillips, “Training is less science than ART. Be the artist.”
Mainstream workout programs focus solely on their personal interpretation of the science in calories being burned during exercise and exaggerate the afterburn effect.
It’s all about getting your heart pumping and soaking you in sweat. They’ll spew out their cherry picked data from research papers and carefully craft their theories into a clever marketing message.
They’ll have you bouncing up and down like a pogo stick and performing crazy moves that should only be allowed as part of a circus act.
They’re obsessed with doing things faster and avoiding rest for the sake of keeping your heart rate elevated the entire time. There’s no doubt that these types of workouts are very intense and will burn calories, but at what cost?
...That’s right there is a cost involved and sacrifices that you make when you opt for this kind of training, one of them being strength and the other one being muscle.
And although these workouts are intense, it’s the wrong kind of intensity. More on that in a minute.
...Those were words from a new female client of mine after she lost "weight" while following mainstream fitness workouts.
This approach is severely flawed. There is no reason why you should put off "shaping your body" while you are in fat burning mode.
In fact, the best thing that you can do is focus on shaping your body while in fat burning mode.
Physique Training isn't about "losing weight"... it's all about reshaping your body and creating your most aesthetically pleasing physique possible.
To give you an example, here's Jacques who has gone from 19% body fat to 7.5% body fat.
During this time Jacques weight has stayed almost the same. There's just 1 pound difference between the two photos, yet Jacques looks like a completely different person because he's added sexy lean muscle while he was burning fat...
Physique Artists view their training as an art form. Their body is a sculpture. They take pride in their work.
After carefully examining their physique in the mirror they are certain where they needs to add muscle and where they needs to chisel away the fat. Every movement that they performs is art in motion.
A physique artist has a complete set of tools and supplies in order to produce the most complete, finished, and polished look possible.
A physique artist uses compound exercises as if they are clay to add to their sculpture, which builds a symmetrical and strong physique.
They’ll use isolation exercises as if they are sandpaper in order to bring out the fine details of their impressive physique.
They’ll use HIIT in moderation as a large chisel and hammer to blast off large chunks of rock and give shape to their body.
They’ll incorporate some long duration cardio as if it’s a smaller chisel carving out even more detail.
They can easily manipulate his nutrition in order to dial directly into the specific visual impact that he wants to impress upon others.
Now on the other hand, mainstream workout programs have a limited supply of tools at their disposal. Typically it’s the large chisel and hammer that they prefer to use.
Their reasoning is that you get the most bang for your buck out of these tools. You can take larger chunks of rock off if you use them.
There are a few problems with this mindset.
First of all, when you over use one tool it becomes worn down and dull. In other words it becomes less effective over time.
The other problem is that you end up with a smaller piece of rock that has very little eye catching and head turning detail.
It’s like a statue that has been worn down by the elements. It’s smooth and doesn’t have much shape to it. This is not an impressive look and it certainly will not catch the attention of others.
For the past decade mainstream fitness has frowned upon isolation exercises, stating that they, "Are a waste of time"... that they "Aren't functional".
Yet it’s the isolation exercises that are the icing on the cake. They bring out the finer details of your physique, creating the finished and polished “Look” that you desire.
It’s isolation exercises that carved out the detail in my lateral, rear, and front delts as you can see illustrated in the picture to the right.
Isolation exercises have sculpted my arms by focusing on more than just the biceps and triceps muscles. One of my favorite muscles to train is the Brachialis muscle, which you can see popping out the side of my arm.
Crunches and twisting movements have also received a bad rap from mainstream fitness, yet it’s those very exercises that have allowed me to get my abs to “POP” and my obliques to stand out.
I chuckle every time that I read an article or email that claims these exercises will break your back or make you fat. HA!
The truth is, Physique Training incorporates all of the best functional exercises that you could possibly perform, such as Front Squats, Deadlifts, Pull-Ups, and Dips, just to name a few.
We simply choose to take things a step further and perform those finishing exercises that enhance your physique, allowing you to look your absolute best.
We’re not just creating a leaner body… we’re sculpting a masterpiece!
For the physique artist it’s about both, creating a beautifully detailed work of art as well as enjoying the process itself.
There’s one thing that you can’t miss when it comes to physique artists... they love every moment that they are immersed in their craft.
Yet, when you observe people performing mainstream workouts, it appears that they are dreading every second of it and counting down the minutes until it’s over.
It has become something they “Have to do” rather than something that they “Want to do” and “Love to do!”
Here's what happens when you treat your workouts as an art form and your body as a sculpture...

In the picture to the right, not only can you see the great detail that I've chiseled out of my back, but you will also notice the aesthetically pleasing V-Taper that so many men and women desire.
For men, the V-Taper can make you look strong, powerful, and attractive.
For women, sculpting a V-Taper is just one of the ways to create a sexy hour glass figure while shaping sexy curves that are firm rather than mushy.
Speaking of sexy curves...
In the picture to the left you can see the detail that Angie has carved out in her abs. You can also see the sexy shape to her arms and shoulders.
In the picture to the right, you see how Angie has built a great butt that definitely catches a guys attention.
By adding muscle to her butt, shoulders, and upper back, Angie has created sexy curves that are firm and attractive!
The first “T” in The A.T.T.R.A.C.T. Formula stands for Training Protocol.
There’s certainly no shortage of training protocol available to you. There’s supersets, dropsets, trisets, giantsets, straightsets, pyramid training, 8x8, 5x5, and german volume training, just to name a few. On their own, each of these training protocol bring to the table, their own unique benefits.
A Physique Artist recognizes that when you combine a few of these training protocol within a single workout, it will accelerate your results.
It’s as if each individual training protocol feeds off each other and enhances the benefits of each type of training. Plus it makes your workouts a lot more fun and exciting.
On the other hand, mainstream workout programs focus on one training protocol, which happens to be the latest trend. Their entire program may be based on circuits until intervals became the hot trend.
Then after a few years of that they see that the new trend is metabolic resistance training, so they abandon what used to be hot for the new fad.
They’re always looking for something new... something gimmicky... and in the meantime they bash anything that’s been around for a while, even though those methods continue to produce absolutely jaw dropping physiques.
The second “T” in The A.T.T.R.A.C.T. Formula stands for Timing of Rest Intervals.
A Physique Artist recognizes the benefits of using a variety of rest intervals. They’ll use the shorter rest intervals in order to achieve a great pump and finish at the end of a workout, while cranking his metabolic system and hitting as many muscle fibers as possible. A physique artist will also increase the rest intervals in order to provide adequate recovery for increased strength and to take full advantage of his central nervous system.
On the other hand, as I’ve mentioned, mainstream fitness is all about performing workouts with little to no rest.
They mislead you into thinking that working up a sweat is what translates into results. I hate to break it to you, but the amount that you sweat during a workout is not the best indicator of how effective the workout is.
The major drawback to performing these “man-aerobics” sessions with little to no rest between exercises or sets is that you have to drastically reduce the weight, sacrificing strength and muscle gains in the process.
You may burn some fat during these workouts, but in the end you will become a skinnier and weaker version of your current self.
One of my “Underground Metabolic Maverick” buddies recently mentioned to me, “If I could squat 315 for 3 sets of 10 and I only squatted 135 because those squats were part of a circuit, I’d not only feel guilty, I’d feel like a WUSS! Wheres my leg warmers??? LOL!”
I couldn’t agree more. Not only will you feel weak physically, but you’ll also feel weak mentally. That is not a recipe for success when it comes to sculpting a masterpiece.
The “R” in The A.T.T.R.A.C.T. Formula stands for Rep Ranges and is in close relationship with the Timing Of Rest Intervals.
A physique artist will utilize the benefits of all rep ranges. There's no rep range to low or too high for a physique artist. All rep ranges serve a purpose in sculpting a masterpiece out of your body.
The lower rep ranges are more taxing on your central nervous system and they allow your body to recruit more muscle fibers during future workouts.
That’s a huge benefit to sculpting a masterpiece. The more muscle fibers that you can recruit, the more dense and detailed your body will become.
One of the unspoken benefits of strength training during a period of prolonged caloric deficit, is that it works incredibly well at preserving your precious muscle mass.
Sacrificing muscle in order to burn fat is a recipe for future failure by slowing your metabolism down.
The medium rep ranges (8-12), have a greater impact on a metabolic and cellular level, which is ideal for building muscle size.
The high rep ranges, believe it or not, can be ideal for stimulating muscle growth when you have become accustomed to lower and medium rep ranges.
If you have never performed high rep squats you are definitely missing out and throwing potential gains out the window.
Mainstream fitness programs will base their training on one rep range that was supposedly proven to burn more fat in one obscure study. According to them, all other rep ranges are a waste of time.
The Physique Artist recognizes that your body adapts to rep ranges faster than it adapts to the exercises in your workout program.
In order to avoid this adaptation, a Physique Artist will skillfully and strategically apply a variety of rep ranges into each workout program.
The biggest benefit of incorporating a variety of rep ranges into your workout program is that you won’t have to sacrifice strength while focusing on hypertrophy training and you won’t have to sacrifice muscle gains when you are focusing on strength training.
You can focus on both strength and hypertrophy within the same workout program for optimal metabolic results.
Plus, when you perform a variety of rep ranges within your workout program you will never get bored and your motivation to stick to the program will skyrocket.
The second “A” in The A.T.T.R.A.C.T. Formula stands for Angles.
The Physique Artist makes it a priority to hit each muscle group from a variety of angles, knowing full well that this is a major key in giving your body that finished and polished look.
You have approximately 640 to 850 muscles in your body, depending on what expert you consult. If you only perform compound movements from the same angles you will never fully develop every muscle, which means that you will never achieve your full potential.
Let’s use your arms as an example here...
Your arms are made up of much more than just a biceps and triceps muscle. You've got the long head and short head of the Biceps Brachii muscle, the Brachialis muscle, the Brachioradialis muscle, the Coracobrachialis muscle, you've got the long, lateral, and medial head of the Triceps Brachii muscle, and other muscles that connect just above the elbow joint.
Neglect even just one of these muscles in your training and your results will be sub-par.
It would be like ordering a Ferrari with Walmart tires and plastic hubcaps... It just wouldn't look right.
It's impossible to fully target and bring out the maximum visual impact from each of these muscles if you are only performing pull-ups, rows, or presses.
I know that time efficient workouts that focus solely on compound movements are all the craze right now and that's all fine and dandy. They are good programs that will produce good results for many people...
...But you don't want just good results... You want kick butt results that stop members of the opposite sex dead in their tracks.
The "C" in The A.T.T.R.A.C.T. Formula stands for Concentration.
This is what separates the fitness enthusiast from the physique artist. This is a major key factor in taking your average body and transforming it into a work of art.
You can always tell who the physique artists are in the gym. Their level of concentration and focus illustrates that they mean business when they come to train. It's as if they are oblivious to everything that is going on around them.
They are truly "Present" in the moment. They are "Experiencing" the workout to the fullest. They are enjoying the process and taking pride in every movement.
Many of the trainers and members of my gym have commented on how focused I am during my workout. They can see the intense passion and drive that I put toward every rep.
This mind-body connection is where you maximize the benefits of every movement that you perform. If I'm going to commit a second of my time toward something, I want to do that thing to the best of my abilities.
Concentration transforms a regular workout into an art form. Physique artists are completely "In-Tune" with the muscle that they are working on at the moment.
With each rep they can feeling the muscle growing and the fat melting away from it. They perform each rep with the same level of focus, pride, and attention that a painter would with each stroke of his brush.
You simply do not see this level of concentration from the mainstream workout programs. It's all about moving faster and quickly moving onto the next exercise without "Feeling" what's going on and without really maximizing the benefit of each rep.
